Chapter Seven

This was only the second time Raff had a general anaesthetic and like the first time, it fucking sucked. Despite being a paranormal with supernatural healing and never getting ill, besides the common cold and apparently COVID-19, a general anaesthetic caused his stomach to clench and somersault, and he had a throbbing pain across the back of his head.

Raff took note of how his body felt and ignored the after effects of the anaesthetic. Both legs ached. His right shoulder was sore, but his rib didn’t feel broken anymore. The area was tender to the touch, but wasn’t painful like after the accident. He was in much better shape, though still needing time to heal. Fortunately, his supernatural healing would make fast work of that.

Once he’d catalogued the injuries and how his body was, Raff began to take note of where he was and carefully moved into a sitting position, his back against a solid walnut headboard. The bedside lamp was on and there were heavy drapes covering the window so he wasn’t sure if it was still nighttime, or sometime during the day.

This was probably a guest room. He didn’t see any personal touches, no photographs or trinkets. It was nice, much nicer than his bedroom, much better than his whole apartment as he had minimal furniture, no pictures on the walls and no rugs.

Noticing his phone on the bedside table, and his motorcycle keys, Raff picked up his device and checked the time. Two in the afternoon. He recalled his phone had a smashed screen after the accident and didn’t turn on. It was definitely his phone, it had the swirled orange, green and red cover that his sister made. As well as healing him, the Astons must have fixed his phone.

He had over thirty messages, most from pack members checking in to see how he was. Wild dog pack members were as close as family, and a lot of them were family. Brothers and sisters, cousins, second and third cousins. He and Des were second cousins, Des had a half-brother in the group and Raff’s sister, Laia, was a pack member until two years ago when she met her mate and moved to Italy with him. Raff planned to go visit them one day. Nate and Merry were the only ones not related to anyone in the pack, and that was because their blood relatives perished in the attack that reduced their group’s numbers and drove them from their home in Savannah. They settled in Milson Valley where there was safety in numbers and some very powerful paranormal groups and human military.

He wasn’t sure how his group knew he’d been injured, but there were a couple of possibilities. One was they’d heard it over the police scanner that the pack kept in the office at their factory. They did this not to avoid the police, but to be aware of any issues going down in the valley so they could take precautions.

Another possibility was the gossip mill.
